Adderall and Adderall Xr generics are manufactured by several different companies. While these different preparations of amphetamine salts (Adderall)have ingredients that are the same as in the brand Adderall generic and are tested for contents and purity by the FDA, quite occasionally patients report different experiences with the different companie’s products. The most common complaints by my patients are that a different brand than they are used to is not as effective at the same dosage for helping with attention, it has side effects, or it feels stronger than their usual brand.
My recommendations for my patients when this happens are to note the manufacturer’s name of Adderall generic brand they were using originally. This is usually printed somewhere on the bottle or the pharmacist at the pharmacy from which they purchased it may be able to identify it by their records or looking at the pill to tell the manufacturer’s name. You may also go online and use a pill identifier website to identify the manufacturer. Also take note of who was the manufacturer of the Adderall generic brand that caused the problem. Then the patient needs to confirm before they pay for their next prescription that it is the brand that they want. Calling around to pharmacies in advance to find out if they have the brand they want may be productive in saving time and frustration of driving around to pharmacies.
Some patients feel that only the original Adderall brand manufactured by Shire Pharmaceutical is effective without side effects for them. The price is much higher than Adderall generic. Insurance companies may pay for the additional expense of brand Adderall if a prior authorization procedure is followed. The pharmacist and/or your physician can assist in this procedure.
Variations among generic versions and between generic and brand versions occur more frequently in my patients with Adderall and Wellbutrin. I prescribe much less dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), but variations in experience with the generics are infrequent. Occasionally I have patients who I suspect abuse Adderall who attempt to get prescriptions early by complaining of the most recently prescribed version of Adderall.
Because Vyvanse, Concerta, and Strattera had no generic versions, I almost never hear complaints by patients about a recent prescription having different results than previous ones.
